1950 - The J. J. Pierce Residence, 1015 Jefferson Drive, Charlotte, architect unknown.  Pierce, retired from owning a successful printing firm, bought the land in 1948.  After his wife died in 1956, the wheelchair-bound Pierce "resurrected himself, threw away the wheelchair and in his 80s took dancing lessons at an Arthur Murray dance studio and was quite popular with the widows."  Sold to Fenton Erwin in 1971.  Sold to James and Jacqueline Maybeck in 1974.  The Maybecks added a two-bedroom, one-bath wing to the rear in 1975, built by Parke Construction Company.  Sold to current owners Madison and Lili Corbus Geer in 2005.  They remodeled the kitchen, the utility area, and created a new family room where the porch used to be. 1951 - The Carl Baxter Residence, 322 Mammoth Oaks, Charlotte, architect unknown.  Sold to unknown buyer.  Sold to Charles Klumpp around 1989.  Sold in 2002 to Eldred Hudson and Robert Rossier.  Located on 1.25 acres with some incredible gardens in the rear.  Photos by Bob Rossier.


1952 - The A. R. Hoover III House, 501 Journey Street, Concord NC.  The architect and engineer was A. R. Hoover III.  4200 sf. Renovations done between 2005 and 2010.  Sold in August 2010 to Chris and Angela Evans. 


 

 

1955 - The Earlene Kimball Residence, 2236 Ferncliff Road, Charlotte.   4300 square feet.  Designed by Louis Humbert Asbury, Jr., right photo. Sold in 1967 to Carey and D'Arlene Pound. Sold in 1997 to Kerry Maxwell.  Sold in 2003 to Michael Newton.  Amy and Jim Langdon bought it in 2007.


 

1958 - The Margie and Julius Goldstein Residence, 447 Merwick Circle, Charlotte NC.  The architect was Albert (Al) Barnes Cameron, in the first class under Henry Kamphoefner at the NCSU School of Design.  He worked for Odell Associates but designed houses on the side.  The Goldsteins lived there for over 50 years.  Sold in 2010 to Mark and Catherine Merkel.


1958 - 714 Larkhall Lane, Charlotte.  Architect unknown.  Sold in 1960 to John O. and Dorothy T. McFarland.  Sold in 1969 to Norman R. and Natalie A. Cohen.  Sold in 1990 to Dane Barkley Howard.  Sold in 1992 to Jason and Madeline McFadden-Lewis.  Sold in 1997 to Michael T. and Elizabeth M. Whitehead.  Sold in 2006 to Shonn Ross.


1958 - The Harry C. and Rebecca Wolf, Jr. House, 3821 Arborway, Charlotte.  Harry's son Harry III became one of North Carolina's most successful architects.  Designed by architect Charles Bates who worked for Odell Associates at the time.  Sold around 1977 to architect Tebee Hawkins and his wife Dorothy.  Sold in 2001 to Matthew and Barrick (Barrie) Benson.


 

1959 - The L. S. Firestone Residence, 2600 Cloister Drive, Charlotte.  Designed by J. A. Malcolm.  Sold to Libby Jernigan and Marilyn (Pete) Mangum.  Photos by George Smart.


1960 - The Charles Bates Residence, 9331 Providence Road, Charlotte.  Designed by architect Charles Bates who worked for Odell Associates at the time.  A close version of the Glass House by Philip Johnson.  The house was accidentally built on the property line with a neighbor.  Sold in 1968 to current owner Stacy Simmons, also an architect.  Simmons bought the adjacent property from the neighbor's family in 1999.


 

1961 - The Wilbert E. and Viola Rankin House, 3111 Spring Valley Road, Charlotte.  Architect unknown.  Sold in 1963 to Edgar and Dorothy Huddleston.  Sold in 1965 to James W. Owens, Jr.  Sold in 1967 to Melvin Hostetter.  Sold to Bobby and Eilo Stephens.  Transferred to Eilo Stephens Rice and Michael Rice.  Sold in 1995 to Timothy A. Karol and Laura Kalman.  Sold in 1999 to Stuart Waggoner.  Sold in 2005 to Julian M. Bass and Delores E. Wendell.  Sold in 2007 to Kristin and Lowell Galindo. Sold in 2010 to Robin and Amanda Unsworth.











 


1964 - The Charles (Chuck) and Carolyn Kibler House, 6012 Colchester, Charlotte.  The original design was by John Crosland Homes.  Architect Kibler, who was working for Marsh & Hawkins, and his wife Carolyn made many Modernist modfications between 1964 and 1989.  Still owned by the Kiblers as of 2011.

1962 - The Hawkings House, 7101 Terrace Drive, Charlotte. Architect unknown.  Built by the Thomasson Company.  2609 sf.   Sold in 1962 to Ted and Vera Lafleur.  They built a three-level deck in the back.  Sold to James W. (Wes) and Teraysa Grasty.  Sold in 2010 to Lowell and Kristin Galindo.  Sold in 2011.


1966 - The Edgar and Mary Jones House, 3409 Knob Hill Court, Charlotte.  Designed by Gene Midyette, who worked for Odell but did houses on the side.  Built by Edgar Jones who still lives there as of 2011.  For sale in 2011.


 

  

1970 - The Mark Bernstein House, 5300 Hardison Road, Charlotte NC.  Designed by California's Lawrence Allen Bernstein, Mark’s brother, who studied with Frank Lloyd Wright.  Locally, Crutcher Ross was the project architect.  1 acre.  Has been vacant since 2006.  For sale since 2009.   Part of the TMH ModShop Tour in 2010.





Approximately 1974 - The "Prototype" Residence, Charlotte. No address.  Do you know where it is? Designed by Ferebee Walters & Associates.  When interviewed in February 2011, Scott Ferebee did not recall if the house was ever built, saying "It may have been a demonstration house for the Wood Council." 


 

1979 - 301 Sardis Lane, Charlotte.  Architect unknown. 4100 sf.  There is a mother-in law suite with a second kitchen and bath.   Sold to Edmond R. and Thelma Johnson. Sold in 2003 to Jeffrey S. Forbes and Claude A. Little.  Sold in 2006 to Adam Pearson and Merritt Friedman.  Vacant for about 18 months.  Sold in 2010 to Andrew D. and Cynthia Peterson. 


1979 - The Eddie Belk House, 524 Jefferson Drive, Charlotte. Designed by architect George E. (Eddie)  Belk.  The terrace was originally open.   Includes a 1300 sf basement.  Sold in 1995 to Andrew Harris, who did renovations including changing the terrace and bridge entrance below.  Sold in 1999 to current owner Mary Lou Albano.


1982 - 84 Turtle Lane, Lake Wylie SC.  Architect unknown.  On the market in 2010.


1984 - The Robert C. Dellinger House, 3306 Nancy Creek Road, Charlotte.  Designed by the owner, architect Bob Dellinger of Dellinger/Lee.  Sold to a Dellinger family trust.  On the market in June 2010.  Sold in 2011 to Richard and Sarah Warmath.



 



1985 - The Phil and Kathy Hess Residence, 8339 Providence Road, Charlotte.  Designed by Jim Meyer of Meyer Greeson.  8000sf.  Built by F. L. Blalock.  Photos by Joann Seiberg-Baker.  Won an 1986 AIANC Design award.  About 10 acres.  Was on the cover of NC Architect Magazine. May 1985.  Sold around 2001 to current owners Jay and Elizabeth Monge.


Around 1985 - The Atkinson Residence, Matthews NC.  Designed by Atkinson/Dyer Architects.


 

2002 - The Robert F. and Deborah Carmazzi Residence, aka The Charlotte Residence, 8363 Providence Road, Charlotte.  Designed by William McDonough Architects.  Allison Ewing was the project architect.  Top photos by Phillip Beaurline.  Nelson Byrd Woltz was the landscape architect.  Sinclair Pratt Cameron were structural engineers.  2RW Consulting Engineers handled mechanical, electrical, and plumbing.  The contractor was Philip Thomas.


 

 

 2003/1955 - 2200 Cloister, Charlotte, a major renovation of an 1800 square foot ranch, bottom photo.  Original owner and architect unknown.  Sold to Jerome and Yvette Hoss.  Sold in 1999 to William H. Meanor.  Sold in 1999 to current owners John (Chris) Gregson and Lee Ann Gregson.  Fred Gregory designed a front addition in 2003.  Dee Blackburn designed a second bedroom addition in 2009.  Top photo by George Smart, others by Chris Gregson. 


2003 - The Franklin H. (Frank) Brooks Residence, 2432 Cloister Drive, Charlotte.  Designed by the owner, attorney Frank Brooks, who describes it as a "contemporary Prairie house."


 

2010 - The Matthias and Caroline Schönberg Addition, 4015 Arborway, Charlotte. Designed by Toby Witte and Jahan Nourbakhsh of Dialect Design.  Renovation of a 1956 ranch, bottom photo, architect unknown.  For sale in 2011.
