The George Matsumoto Prize
Recognizing Excellence in North Carolina Modernist Residential Design

The George Matsumoto Prize for North Carolina Modernist residential architecture is a unique design competition featuring $6,000 in awards, a blue-ribbon jury of internationally known architects, and online public voting. In the first year the Prize was offered, 2012, over 2,000 people voted worldwide.

The Matsumoto Prize was created by TMH in honor of George Matsumoto FAIA. Matsumoto was one of the founding faculty members of the NCSU School of Design and created some of the state's most well-known and well-loved Modernist houses.

Architecture is art, but the general public hasn't caught on to that in large numbers.  The Matsumoto Prize encourages the public to appreciate architecture as an art form, and it encourages young architects to continue the Modernist movement in houses so important to North Carolina and the arts.

Most people don't realize, or even suspect that North Carolina is the third largest concentration of Modernist houses in America.  The Prize promotes new talent and provides a motivating incentive to young architects to keep the Modernist movement alive and thriving.  The Prize contributes to wide public recognition of Modernism in all its forms (architecture, art, furniture, and fashion) and recognizes the significant economic and aesthetic impact of Modernist architecture and architects across our state.

The Prize is unique.  It the only juried architecture competition in North Carolina (and one of very few in the country) that a) focuses on houses, b) focuses on Modernism, c) provides financial awards, d) involves a national jury and public voting, and e) connects to a major architectural archive.

The Prize is a powerful way to engage the public and demonstrate the unique talent of outstanding Modernist architects and houses in North Carolina and across America.
