Michael Rantilla was born in Sao Paolo, Brazil.  His family worked in the automotive industry there and later they moved to East Lansing and Detroit.  In 1996, he graduated with a Bachelors in Architecture from Cornell then worked for Rossetti Associates, Smithgroup, and Gurlitz Architectural Group.  In 1997 he moved to Raleigh and worked for Freelon Group.  Later he was heavily involved in the firm's African-American Museum in Washington DC.  When the firm was acquired, he became managing principal in the Sao Paolo office.

 2008 - The Michael and Angela Rantilla House, 1804 Pictou Road, Raleigh.  Built by the Michael Rantilla. Won tthe 2009 AIA Triangle Honor Award; the 2009 AIANC Honor Award; and a 2009 AIA South Atlantic Regional Honor Award.  Photos by Mark Herboth.  TMH toured the house in 2011.  Won 2nd in the 2012 George Matsumoto Jury Prize.
