RALPH BERNARD REEVES, JR. (1920-1984)

Reeves was born in Brunswick GA.  His family moved to Raleigh and he graduated from the NCSU Department of Architectural Engineering in 1941.   During WWII, Reeves was in the Army as a Captain and earned a Bronze Star, Silver Star, and Purple Heart for combat in the Pacific.  He returned to Raleigh and worked for Cooper Haskins

William Weber, Reeves, and John Holloway formed what would become one of the state's largest design firms in Raleigh in 1948.  The firm would design many of Raleigh's public buildings, from schools to churches to government.  Terry Waugh, who worked there for a time, designed the circular Harrelson Hall at NCSU in 1961.

Holloway and Reeves left Weber to form a long and successful partnership.  They consulted with Edward Durell Stone for the NC Legislative Building and the NC Museum of Art.  The firm's accomplishments were extensive:

1950 - The Ernest Ball Residence, 1220 Duplin Road, Raleigh, built by Clancy Construction  (later Clancy and Theys).  About 1400 square feet, three bedrooms and a bath and a half.  Remodeled in 1970. The footprint is in the "shape" of a L and has casement windows, some as large as 6' x 5.  Sold to Monroe Gardner Jr. in 1969.  Sold to William and Karen Forteno in 1977.  Sold to Ronald Procner in 1984.  Sold in 1997 to current owner Kevin Kane who took these photos.

1950 - The Julie and Frances (Mac) McVay Residence, 3119 Darien, Raleigh.  Sold to William anfd Betsy Hood in 1959.  The McVay's moved to a new house designed by Brian Shawcroft.  Sold to Michael and Ann Gardner in 2000.  Sold to current owner Ann Bryan Huffman in 2002.   Destroyed in 2005.   A new house is now on the site.

1952 - The Ralph B. and Frances Reeves, Jr. Residence, his own house at 2105 Buckingham, Raleigh. 1200 square feet.  Sold to Fred and Patricia Benton in 1956.  Sold to William and Patricia Benton Fitzgerald.  Sold in 1989 to current owner Fred Benton, Jr.
