JOHN ROBERT (ROBBY) JOHNSTON IV, AIA (1980-)

Johnston is a North Carolina native, born and raised in Albemarle. In middle school he discovered his uncle’s collection of architectural drawings and a career was born.  He attended UNC-Charlotte's College of Architecture where he was selected for the inaugural Belgium study abroad program. His thesis project won two awards. 


Johnston began his professional career in 2003 with Michael Ross Kersting Architecture in Wilmington NC.  Moving to Raleigh with Tonic Design & Tonic Construction from 2004 to 2010, he served as a project manager and site superintendent on many significant projects, including the Woodbine Residence and the DA Sharpe Residence.

 

Of special note at Tonic for Johnston was the Walters Residence, recognized as the first LEED certified modern home in NC, the first recipient of the AIA NC COTE Award, and the winner of the AIA NC Gail Lindsay Sustainability Award.

He began working as a project architect with Clearscapes Art+Architecture in 2010.




 



2011 - The CC House, address unknown.  Designed with architect Craig Kerins.  Built by
Charles Coggin of Custom Creations, Inc.  A garage will be added in 2012. 



2013 - The Robby and Ryan Johnston House, 554 East Edenton Street, Raleigh.  Under development.
